MOEGATLE 4X4
2016-06-13
WHAT?
A dusty 4x4 trail known for its challenging obstacles, countless cross-axles, and a rock face called Koos se Klim. Pitched at a terrifying 43º angle, this giant granite peak made Moegatle (in)famous amongst off-road enthusiasts, many of whom view Koos se Klim as a pilgrimage to 4x4 manhood: a place to prove their mettle and their vehicles’ ability.
WHY?
As we’ve said, first-time visitors generally travel to the trail to view (or tackle) Koos se Klim. Unfortunately, many fail; and to prove this fact the trail features a photographic wall of shame depicting dozens of “fallen” 4x4s – a number of them lying on their roofs. However, the trail also boasts a following of avid users who repeatedly visit the trail for its numerous other offerings, including a long sandy road known as Klein Botswana, a variety of obstacles, and the arid terrain that is starkly beautiful.
WHERE?
Moegatle is located in the North West Province, about 30km from Brits when travelling towards Thabazimbi on the Veekraal / Dikhololo road.
WHEN?
The trail is open all year round, but the winter months are quite special in terms of being extra dry and arid. The summer months are hot and muggy, but the trail is well equipped, and this also means a large pool, lots of shade, and a bar to hang around.
HOW?
Surprisingly, Koos se Klim isn’t hard to drive as far as vehicle performance goes. In most cases, a stock-standard 4x4 with low-range and respectable suspension travel will successfully tackle the climb. The trick to conquering Koos se Klim is to make sure your vehicle is lined up at the base of the slope. Pick the correct line from the beginning, and avoid making steering inputs while you’re on the rock. The truth is that you won’t know where you’re steering to, because your windscreen will be full of sky. So, again − make sure you’re properly lined up from the start.
The remaining obstacles at Moetgatle sport names like Prado Killer, Propshaft Valley, Sledge Hammer, Klipdrift, Hmm-Hmm, and Skipskop. Their titles are an obvious indication of what these grade 4 and 5 challenges are like. More importantly, they’re a clear message that this is NOT softroader country; your 4x4 must be low-range-equipped and boast at least 220mm of ground clearance; and if you don’t have a front or rear diff-lock, at the very least you’re going to need stack loads of suspension travel.
