AT SE GAT 4X4

2016-03-22

WHAT?

A 4x4 route and picnic area on the banks of the Crocodile River. It’s well known for its many iconic obstacles, such as ‘Briekmerk’ and the infamous ‘Z-Turn’. The trail is guaranteed to impress you with its picturesque scenery and action-packed 4x4 experience.

WHY?

Although relatively new, At Se Gat has rapidly earned a reputation for its scenic diversity and vastly varied terrain. You can expect to encounter adventurous river crossings, loose climbs, muddy sections, sand ditches, and plenty of rocky plateaus for anyone wishing to engage in some rock crawling. The trail boasts a variety of man-made obstacles, naturally weathered sections, and a scenic mountain drive, which is ideal for those memorable sundown drives with friends and family.

The river frontage is open to day visitors, and facilities include braais, fresh water supply, spacious picnic areas, and a large swimming pool with a pool slide. Campsites (with fresh water and electricity) are dotted along the river bank, and each one has breathtaking views and total tranquility.

An onsite pub, perched right on the river’s edge, makes for a great place to quench your thirst after a full day’s adventure.

WHERE?

At Se Gat is in the North West Province, approximately 10km from Brits. It’s not too far from Moegatle 4x4 Trail, and within close proximity to a number of game lodges and holiday resorts.

WHEN?

You can visit At Se Gat all year round, with the summer months providing plenty of water and muddy sections which pop up with the changing water levels. The drier winter months are great to conquer the river crossings in a stock-standard 4x4. More experienced drivers (and modified vehicles) can explore some of the exposed rocky river beds, which is why it’s best to enquire about the water levels upon arrival.

HOW?

Although the trail caters for amateur 4x4 enthusiasts in standard production vehicles, as well as more experienced drivers with equipped vehicles, your 4x4 must be low-range capable to take on At Se Gat. What’s more, it’s important to know your vehicle’s strengths and weaknesses before attempting some of the more challenging parts of the route.

The water levels can vary greatly, so walk the river before attempting any crossings. The entire 4x4 route is relatively condensed, and although it might only be 4 to 5 km long, it can take a full day to complete. Fortunately, the route can be aborted at any time, allowing you to return to the campsite or reception area.
