What is a DOM code and where can I find it on a tyre?

DOM stands for Date of Manufacture. It is a four digit code depicting the week and the year the tyre was made, i.e. 2417 is the 24th week of 2017. You can find it on the sidewall of a tyre normally next to the DOT (Department of Transport) code. Read more.

What is a P-metric tyre?

Accepted Answer

P-metric indicates that a tyre is designed for a passenger vehicle. Passenger vehicles are cars, for example sedans, coupes, bakkies, or SUVs. P-metric tyres are designed for urban and motorway use but can also be used on trucks that do not carry extra heavy loads or run on gravel roads. If there is no letter in front of the size, then the tyre is for passenger cars, and closely equivalent to P-metric.

What is an LT-rated tyre?

LT stands for light truck, and as the name suggests these tyres are designed for 4X4’s and SUVs. The label LT is usually placed in front of the tyre size. The LT indicates that these tyres are meant for light truck use. Light truck rated tyres are designed to haul heavier loads.

How often should I rotate and align my tyres?

It is recommended to rotate and align tyres every 8000kms to maintain tyre life. However, off-road tyres on heavier vehicles may benefit from more regular rotation to avoid irregular wear.

What is an all-terrain tyre?

Accepted Answer

All-Terrain generally means 70% on-road and 30% off-road use. These tyres are used for travelling on road, sand and gravel. This makes all-terrain tyres the best-suited tyre for most surfaces.

What is a mud terrain tyre?

A mud terrain tyre is designed to handle serious off-road conditions, generally 80% off-road and 20% on road. Mud tyres are also constructed to be more puncture resistant and more durable in most terrains.

What is a multi-terrain tyre?

Multi-terrain generally means 50% on-road and 50% off-road use. It is a rugged tyre, but not as chunky as a mud terrain tyre. It is tough enough to do multiple terrains including serious off road capabilities.

I suspect something is wrong with my tyres – what should I do?

Return to the dealer. The Dealer will inspect the tyre for the cause of damage and consider whether the damage is irreparable. If the tyre damage is irreparable the dealer will complete the tyre evaluation form and submit it to TyreLife Solutions with photographic support and or evidence for approval. TyreLife Solutions shall advise the dealer the outcome of the evaluation within 7 days of receipt of the completed evaluation submission.

What tyre pressure must I use?

There is no universal right pressure for all tyres. The proper inflation level is dependent on many factors such as tyre pattern, type of vehicle, amount of load, how the vehicle is being driven and the condition of the road to name a few. You can find the recommended tyre pressure for your vehicle in your vehicle handbook or printed either in the sill of the driver's door or on the inside of the fuel tank flap. Your vehicle manufacturer may suggest different tyre pressures for your front and rear tyres so make sure you're aware of these guidelines. Read more.

Can I fit a different size to my vehicle than what I currently have on?

Use the tyre finder on this website to find a suitable conversion size. Type in the original tyre size as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Note:   If changing the tyre size you must do so on all wheels… and don’t forget the spare.

How should I wash and take care of my wheels?

Accepted Answer

Wheels should be cleaned by hand regularly to remove contaminants like road grime, salt, sand, dirt and brake dust. Avoid using automatic spray and touch free car washes which do not completely remove contaminants, these can cause harm to the finish, hand washing is highly recommended.

PCD stands for Pitch Circle Diameter. The PCD is the diameter of the circle in the centre of all the wheel bolts. The diameter is measured in millimetres.
