DE WILDT 4X4 TRAIL
2017-05-22
WHERE
On the R513, some 40 kilometres west of Pretoria, en route to Hartbeespoort Dam. It’s also a quick hour’s drive from Johannesburg.
WHY?
Situated close to Joeys and Pretoria, this is an easy destination for a day’s off-road fun. De Wildt is a mountainous game farm you can explore in your 4x4 (with challenges galore) and it has a great resort where you and the family can just kick back and relax. What’s more, there’s a great deal to see and do in the immediate area. This venue is suitable for a day visit or a weekend away.
WHEN
De Wildt 4x4 Trail can be driven all year round but can become extremely challenging in the wet – when sections like ‘Gert se Klip’ shouldn’t be attempted at all. Summers in this area are very hot so remember the sunscreen and hat! Winters on the Highveld are usually mild but with cold evenings so if you’re staying late or staying over, pack some warm gear.
WHAT
Located on the northern slopes of the Magaliesburg, De Wildt offers a mountainous trail as well as a training area, and resort. So, this is much more than just a trail, it’s a place you can confidently bring the whole family knowing that no-one is going to get bored. While driving the trails you can enjoy game viewing and bird watching, and there are great lookout points too - don’t forget the camera!
Once you’re done driving, you can enjoy the rest of the day in the picnic areas with its trees, manicured lawns and permanent braais. Other facilities include thatched lapas, swimming pools, bar, walking trails, game drives, mountain biking, jungle gym and catch & release fishing for kids, and various accommodation options. This venue offers all the attractions of a typical resort so this is an easy place to stay for the whole weekend. It’s got that back to nature feeling about it so by the time you get home you’re sure to feel relaxed and recharged!
HOW
This self-drive trail is restricted to 4x4 vehicles and you’ll need one with low-range and good ground clearance. Terrain ranges from sand to rock but with more of the latter. The trail obstacles are graded from 3 all the way up to 5, and there are escape routes in place if you feel like you’re getting in over your head. Only experienced 4x4ers should tackle ‘Gert se Klip’. If you’re a novice, this isn’t a trail to drive alone, so tag along with someone more experienced. The route is signposted and a map is also provided. You’ll find a drinking fountain and toilet along the trail. Recovery is available at R350 a time!
