CARACAL 4x4 ECO TRAIL
2016-04-19
WHAT?
One of South Africa’s top overnight eco trails and a true 4x4 adventure.
WHY?
If you’re looking for a 4x4 trail that’s more than just a one-day / one-night affair, the Caracal Route is for you. The trail is approximately 175km long and can be driven over several days – it depends on how much time you wish to spend viewing, and how many days you spend camping along the route. The trail features some of SA’s most breathtaking scenery as well as vastly varied terrain and guaranteed solitude.
WHERE?
The Caracal Eco Trail starts in the interior of the Northern Cape, then meanders its way towards the sea, before finally tracing the west coast of SA. The entire route is situated within the Namaqua National Reserve.
WHEN?
Although the trail is open all year round, the best time of year is during the flower season (August / September), when the whole region is carpeted with countless flowers. However, bear in mind that the park is at its busiest during this time, and it’s highly recommended that you book in advance.
HOW?
The Caracal Eco Trail is an overland route, rather than an all out 4x4 trail, so it isn’t difficult to drive. Although many high-riding 4x2s (with diff-lock) could probably complete the trail, for the sake of conservation and route maintenance, only 4x4s are permitted.
