LEKGALAMEETSE 4X4 ROUTE

2015-10-13

WHAT?

The Lekgalameetse is a Limpopo provincial park. The reserve covers roughly 18 718ha of mountain wilderness.

WHY?

Have you ever wanted to visit a jungle so dense that even the vines have vines? The sort of place where pangas are put to good use and recovery tracks are the only way forward? Well, this is it.

WHERE?

The Limpopo province, far into the northern reaches of the Drakensberg.

WHEN?

The route can be driven all year round, but the best time is straight after the rainy season, when the rivers are strong, and the vines and ferns are dense.

HOW?

You’ll need a low-range capable 4x4 with at least 230mm of ground clearance, along with recovery points if possible. The first few hundred metres of the route are incredibly tough, as the road’s are often eroded by heavy rain. After that, the drive becomes far more relaxed and even paced. The trail can take a full day to complete; it all depends on the condition of the road and how much rain has fallen at the time.
